Managing Insomnia

 "Coping with Insomnia" will be the next topic in the Waveny Care Network and Norwalk Hospital lecture series to be held at The Village at Waveny Care Center on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. 

The featured speaker is Ian D. Weir, DO, Associate Director of the Sleep Disorders Center and Director of the Insomnia Center at Norwalk Hospital.

Many people suffer from insomnia, which is having trouble falling asleep. Dr. Weir will talk about symptoms and how people can learn to address insomnia through good sleep hygeine and/or treatments.  He will provide important tips such as:

            * Don't go to bed unless you are sleepy.

            * Get up the same time each morning.

            * Begin rituals that help you relax each night before you go to bed.

            * Keep a regular schedule.

            * Make your bedroom quiet and dark.

            * Do not have caffeine after lunch.

Dr. Weir is also Associate Program Director for the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program and teaching faculty for the Pulmonary Section at Norwalk Hospital.  He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care, and board eligible in Sleep Medicine.

He received his B.A. degree in Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

He completed his internal medicine training at Johns Hopkins University/Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and was selected to a Fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care at Yale University and Norwalk Hospital.  During his Fellowship, Dr. Weir developed an evidenced-based clinical decision model for the evaluation of pulmonary embolism.

He later completed a Fellowship in Sleep Medicine at Norwalk Hospital.  During his Fellowship in Sleep Medicine, he led a research study from which the results will be used to develop tool to screen for obstructive sleep apnea in surgical patients.

Dr. Weir has authored articles on pulmonary medicine topics and a book chapter on sleep disorders.  His research has been published in medical journals and presented at national meetings.

His professional affiliations include memberships in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Thoracic Society, and the American College of Chest Clinicians.

Dr. Weir specializes in the treatment of sleep and lung disorders.   He is also committed to providing community service and promoting preventive medicine. As a volunteer physician at the AmericCares Free Clinic in Norwalk, he provides subspecialty medical and preventive care to asthma patients.  He also presents to civic organizations and senior centers and volunteers at community health fairs.

Prior to coming to Norwalk, Dr. Weir volunteered to help educate medically underserved teenagers in both New York City, NY, and Miami, FL, on HIV awareness as well as career development.
