Osteoarthritis and Joint Replacement: Topic at Waveny Care Network

“Osteoarthritis and Joint Replacement” is an upcoming topic in the Waveny Care Network and Norwalk Hospital lecture series to be presented at The Village at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan on Thursday, June 7, at 4 p.m.

Nicholas V. Polifroni, MD, of Westport, chief of orthopaedics at Norwalk Hospital, is the featured speaker.  Dr. Polifroni is in private practice with Coastal Orthopaedics, with offices in Norwalk, Westport and Darien.  His areas of expertise include Total Joint Replacement and Sports Medicine. 

During his presentation at Waveny Care Center, Dr. Polifroni will discuss osteoarthritis, which is associated with aging and “wear and tear” on the joints.  He will provide information on the latest clinically proven techniques in joint replacement surgery, including minimally invasive surgery.  He will explain how these new approaches help improve function and reduce pain.

About the Speaker

A Senior Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Polifroni has been a member of the Medical Staff of Norwalk Hospital since 1982.   Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is a former recipient of the prestigious Frank Scallon Surgical Innovation Award presented by the Norwalk Hospital Department of Surgery.  Dr. Polifroni was named to Connecticut Magazine’s Top Docs for three consecutive years.

He holds a B.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, and an M.D. degree from New York Medical College, New York, NY.

After completing his surgical internship at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Polifroni pursued his orthopaedic surgical residency training at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York, NY, where he was Chief Resident.  During this time, he also trained at the James Nicholas Institute for Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma.  He completed a pediatric orthopaedic surgery rotation at Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children in Philadelphia, PA.

He is a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and holds professional memberships in the American Medical Association, Connecticut State Medical Society, Fairfield County Medical Association and the Norwalk Medical Society, in which he was a Past President.
