New Canaan School Calendar Adjusted For Sandy

The New Canaan Board of Education on Monday reportedly approved a set of adjustments to the 2012-2013 school calendar in order to make up for the loss of "snow days" due to the superstorm.

In order to make up for the six days of school lost due to Hurricane Sandy, the New Canaan school district will add four days to the end of the school year and will change a staff development day on Feb. 15 from a day off for students to a half day of school, according to a revised school calendar (see attached PDF).

The Board of Education on Monday reportedly approved a set of previously-discussed adjustments to the 2012-2013 school calendar in order to make up for the loss of "snow days" due to the superstorm.

Because the school district schedules a 182-day school year, but the state only requires 180 days, the district has decided to make up the sixth day by having students go to school 181 days, instead of 182.

As per the revised school calendar, which was presented and discussed during the board's Nov. 19 meeting, the last day of school is now June 21.

Going forward, should the district need to use more than two additional "snow days," those days will be taken from the spring break in April.

Should the district use up the five days in the April break, due to winter storms, officials will discuss adding more days to the end of the school year.
