New Teachers for the New School Year

New Canaan Public Schools are gearing up for the upcoming school year by hiring some new faculty members.

With the new school year about to commence in a few weeks, New Canaan Public Schools will have 32 new teachers and staff on its roster. Most of the new hires will be filling positions at the town's three grammar schools. According to Assistant Superintendent of Schools Steven Swerdlick, most of the positions were filled quickly with little advertising for the posts.

At the elementary level, East will have four new teachers in its first, third, and fourth grades plus a new school  psychologist. South Elementary School will welcome a new third grade teacher and literacy specialist while West will have a trio of new third grade teachers and a second grade teacher. Saxe Middle School will have a total of 13 new teachers including a sixth grade and two new seventh grade science teachers, three special education instructors and two fifth grade language arts teachers

Additionally, Saxe will welcome a new social studies, art, health and physical education teachers, a guidance counselor plus a part-time Spanish teacher. For the coming school year, New Canaan High School will have a new guidance counselor plus a technical education teacher and an English and  Social Studies instructors. There was no mention at Monday's Board of Education meeting about NCPS' pilot program to check teacher's Facebook profiles prior to hiring.

Also this fall, New Canaan will be without two veteran teachers following their resignations that  were accepted by the Board of Education on Monday evening.

Megan Dixon, a first-grade teacher who taught at East Elementary School, gave her resignation last week, due to her husband taking a new job in Jupiter, FL. In her letter to Swerdlick, she said she will miss principal Bunny Potts and her colleagues, calling them an "amazing group of people to work with." Dixon literally began her education career at East, interning at the school and then working there as a first-grade teacher for the last three years.

Kelly Burger, a teacher at West Elementary School, also tendered her resignation earlier this month. Burger, who  lives in New Milford, cited the long commute as the reason for her leaving and will pursue a position closer to her home. Burger said she regretted resigning from her position, and will "miss the students and staff."
