School Board Laments Likely 'Cut' of Additional Custodian

Board of Education officials on Monday -- during a discussion of how to meet town spending guidelines for next year -- regretted that the addition of one custodian to the schools could be removed from staffing plans for next year.

Though the district is adding some positions to the payroll next year -- including a dedicated communications person -- several positions that had been planned may not make the cut after the town voted to give the schools about $1.5 million less than the Board of Ed wanted.

Board member Penny Rashin specifically highlighted the likelihood that one planned additional custodian -- itself said by maintenance officials at public meetings to be far less than what's needed -- would be cut.

Board member Amy Rochlin said that immediate impact will be felt by the lack of the additional custodian in "what our schools look like."

Board member Jim Kucharczyk, referring to statements from town officials that the district could get $2.5 million less than requested (including for capital projects) without disrupting the classroom and instruction were clearly false.

"We can't make a $250,000 cut" without impacting the classroom, he said.
