Students Saluted for Giving To Others

CABE Awards are presented at the BOE meeting, Monday, May 23.

and , both NCHS seniors, were recognized at the Mon, May 23 Board of Education meeting by Superintendent of Schools, Dr. David Abbey, with the Connecticut Boards of Education Student Leadership Awards.

Calling her, "a highly regarded and influential senior, who enjoys giving back to her school and town," Abbey added that she does this, "from the heart." He praised Dumbauld as well for speaking before her class at the assembly about the importance of standing up for the underdog. 

A member of the for the New Canaan Community Foundation, he explained that she juggles her busy school and extracurricular activities with a four-day a week job.

Abbey concluded that it's not surprising, that with her well-developed sense of fairness, she has indicated a desire to pursue a career in law or criminal justice. She begins her higher education this fall at the University of Richmond.

The CABE Awards, which are presented based on nominations solicited by the Superintendent of Schools and the principals of high schools throughout Connecticut from their faculty, are given to one male and one female student in each district.

This year's male recipient was Thomas Krieger. 

As Dr. Abbey explained, "with Tom's devotion to baseball and hockey, (each of which he served as captain this year), studies, etcetera, he has no time to waste during the day." 

Abbey went on to marvel at the time he nonetheless managed to carve out to be a part of the Leadership Council and devote to their assemblies on and "Names Can Hurt." 

Calling him, "someone with an unusually developed sense of responsibility," he also noted that he is a "gentleman and a class act, who will no doubt contribute immeasurably to the freshman class at Denison University next year."

As Krieger explained to Patch, his involvement with the Leadership Council began his freshman year when it was formed by . 

Asked if he plans to continue community service in college, Krieger said, "I've had a great experience here at the high school; and if the opportunity presents itself at Denison, I will jump on it. This experience has given me the confidence to get involved."
