Week in Review: Child Pornography Charges Against DeiCas, Another Vehicle-Pedestrian Accident, 9/11 Remembered

A look back at the week of Sept. 5 - 11, 2001.

Weston police charged New Canaan resident Scott DeiCas with child pornography after searching computers confiscated from his home after a 10-hour-standoff with police in late August.  Those charges are added to earlier charges of computer crimes and harassment brought against the former school bus driver by both Weston and New Canaan police.

On Thursday afternoon a Darien woman was hit by an out of control van as she walked with her husband and son on South Avenue.  The van, which was reported to have been "driving erratically,"  clipped the front of a car and knocked over a street sign before jumping the curb and striking Carol Venezia.

Jewish residents observed Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, at services held at the New Canaan Nature Center this week.  According to celebrants, it was the first time the high holidays have been observed in New Canaan.

First responders, police officers, firefighters, town officials and residents attended a memorial service for the victims of 9/11 on the day before the ninth anniversary of the attack. In response to that day's events, towns around Fairfield County have established emergency preparedness protocols that have served them well in times of natural disasters.

The 2010-2011 school year started last week and enrollment in the public schools was higher than projected.  School officials attribute the increase to the economy as well as the good reputation of the school system.
