Workshop: How Common Core Standards Change Reading, Writing Education

The way subjects like reading, writing and math are taught in New Canaan schools is changing because Connecticut and other states are changing statewide education testing to reflect "Common Core" standards.

On Tuesday, Genda Green, reading coordinator for New Canaan Public Schools, and Karen Scalzo, writing coordinator for the district, are presenting a workshop, "Getting to the Heart of Reading and Writing," to show parents the changes in teaching  reading and writing education is changing in New Canaan's public schools.

"This workshop will help parents make sense of the Common Core State Standards and how they align with the New Canaan reading and writing curriculum," according to a school district news release. "Participants will see what the standards look like as they are applied in the classroom and integrated into the NCPS curriculum and will leave with an increased understanding of our expectations in language arts."
