Tips for Car Trips With Pets

Many people bring their pets along when vacationing. Plan ahead to keep your pet safe while traveling and when you reach your destination.

If your pet is prone to tummy upset, create a plan ahead of time to slowly acclimate the pet to car travel. For best results, schedule a trainer visit for proper steps for success.

A dog in the rear of car can get very warm. Sometimes the air conditioning does not reach to the very rear of the vehicle. Pay particular attention to this area so as not to endanger the dog. Dogs are very Never leave your dog unattended without the air conditioner on. “Cracked” windows are not enough.

Be cautious about letting your dog hang out of the window. Debris could fly in its eyes. Also, when taking a sharp turn or if they see something they want to chase, they could fall out.

Things to bring along when traveling by car with your dog:

  • Crate — collapsible, portable or wire
  • Crate pad
  • Bed
  • ID tags (with both local address and your permanent address)
  • Food
  • Water
  • Travel bowls
  • Treats — Chewies, Bones, etc.
  • Toys
  • Travel first aid kit for pets
  • Car barrier
  • Doggie ramp
  • Doggie Car Seat
  • Doggie Poop Bags
  • Collar
  • Harness
  • Leash
  • Car Seat Harness
  • A long tie out
  • Extra towels
  • A bottle of Rescue Remedy is always a good thing to bring along to help the animal cope with travel anxiety.
  • If traveling long distances with a cat, provide a crate large enough to include a small litter pan.
