Five Rams Score in 5-0 Win Over Fairfield Ludlowe/Warde

New Canaan heads into Greenwich game on Saturday with 8-0 record.

The New Canaan girls hockey team raised its record to 8-0 Monday afternoon with a 5-0 win over the Fairifield Ludlowe/Warde co-op team  at the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport. Five different players scored for the Rams.

Each class was well represented on the scoring sheet. Maggie Burke represented the senior class, Jana Persky, the juniors, Lauren Campbell the sophomores and Olivia Hompe, Bianca Schultz and Bea Eppler, the freshman class.

In their previous seven games, the Rams had scored 40 goals to their opponents' five. After this win the totals are 45 to five.

It's been a "deuces wild" beginning for Fairfield with a 2-2-2 record before Monday but it was obvious early on that the Falcons couldn't skate with the Rams. New Canaan came at them in waves, with coach Rich Bulan playing four lines. As has happened so many times this season, the fresh legs had the opposition back on their heels. Despite a scoreless first period, the Rams were controlling all three zones. At the first intermission New Caanan had a 9-2 edge in shots.

In the second period, the Rams tightened the screws and picked up the tempo. Eppler hit a post followed by another "clanger" from Madzie Carroll as the Rams were homing in on the goal. Co-captain Persky opened the scoring with "helpers" from Hompe and Barada five-minutes in. Just under five-minutes later, the Rams struck again. Burke took a rebound and scored on assists from Hompe and Persky for a 2-0 lead. It became 3-0 a little over a minute later when Campbell backhanded a rebound of a Molly Robustelli shot into the net with an assist from Abbey Buckenheimer. The period ended with the Rams up 3-0.

It didn't take New Canaan very long to score in the third period. Just 16 seconds in, Schultz hit a slapper from the right circle that hit the back of the net for a 4-0 lead. The final goal was scored by Eppler with an assist from Buckenheimer with 2:55 remaining.

New Canaan out-shot Fairfield 36-7 as goalie Charlotte Spitzfadden recorded her fourth shutout.

New Canaan will play Greenwich on Saturday in the first game of a girls and boys double-header at Greenwich.
