New Canaan Baseball Clinches FCIAC Playoff Spot

Rams secure spot with a 5-2 win over Trumbull on Sunday and will face either Norwalk or Staples in the FCIAC quarterfinals on Tuesday

The New Canaan baseball team still doesn't know who its quarterfinal opponent will be, but the Rams clinched an FCIAC playoff spot with a 5-2 win over Trumbull on Sunday in a game postponed from last week.

The Rams improved to 13-6 overall and 12-5 in the FCIAC with another makeup game to play against McMahon on Monday.

New Canaan's win officially eliminated Wilton from the FCIAC playoff race. The Warriors actually finished in a three-way tie for seventh with Fairfield Warde and Greenwich at 11-7, but lost a tiebreaker and technically dropped to ninth.

Since New Canaan's final two games impact the standings, the start of the FCIAC playoffs was pushed back one day until Tuesday. The semifinals and finals will be played Thursday and Saturday at Harbor Yard.

Peter Meadows earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs over five innings, before Andrew Casali pitched the final two innings to earn the save.

The Rams jumped on top with three runs in the top of the first, then tacked on two more in the sixth to make it 5-0. Trumbull scored both its runs in the home sixth.

If New Canaan beats McMahon on Monday, the Rams finish in a three-way tie for third with the Senators and Staples at 13-5.  Since New Canaan will have wins over both, it would grab the No. 3 seed and host No. 6 Norwalk on Tuesday.

If New Canaan loses, it drops into a tie for fifth with Norwalk at 12-6. Since the Rams beat the Bears, they would secure the No. 5 seed and play at No. 4 Staples in the quarterfinals.
