New Canaan Loses To Darien At Home In Girls Volleyball

Rams now 2-1 as Blue Wave improves to 3-0.

The Darien and New Canaan girls volleyball teams were each 2-0 going into Monday's match at New Canaan. The Blue Wave handed the Rams its first loss, in straight sets 25-13, 25-15 and 25-15. Darien led from wire-to-wire in the first two sets but faced a more competitive Rams squad in the third set when New Canaan  led 9-7. The lead was short lived when Darien went on a six point run after going ahead 13-11.

New Canaan, less experienced, has only two seniors on the team, co-captains Ellen Trinklein and Melissa Tweed.

Trinklein said, "We played hard. Coming back in the last set was good  for us and we hope to build on that." Tweed echoed her sentiments, saying their level of play really improved in the third set and hoped that would be a starting point for the next game. Coach Katie Campbell took it a step further. "I thought we came together as a team in the third set and that our young talent was aggressive all the way through."

Wave senior captain, Mackenzie Begley, said afterwards ,"We were a little slow today–I don't know why, but we were." Darien had ended the 2009 season with a 25-0 record and, for only the second time in school history, hadn't lost a set. (the first time they did that was in the 2007 season). But this season Ridgefield took a set in Darien's 3-1 win last week.

Begley is a returnee from last season's 25-0 team where she was All-FCIAC. The  "Two Trees" from last year have graduated, the six-foot-plus Colby Billhardt and Sarah Gorski. The Wave has a different look this season. In Billhardt and Gorski they lose the two big spikers and blockers, replacing them with some good athletes with all around skills with a smooth and efficient passing game.

The Rams were led by Tweed with 5 kills and 10 digs, Kellen Tensen with 2 aces, 6 digs and 5 assists and Annie Conover who had 3 kills and 4 digs.

New Canaan next plays on Wednesday, at Wilton, in a 5:30 p.m. start.
