New Canaan Mother-Son to Play Alongside Pros at First Niagara Family Classic

Heide and Alexander Merjian set to play in the "Mother and Child 14/Under" division at the New Haven Open on Thursday, August 22nd.

Local New Canaan mother and son tennis players Heide and Alexander Merjian are one of eighteen teams comprised of family members who have advanced to the finals of the First Niagara Family Classic and will play alongside five of the world’s top 10 players at the New Haven Open at Yale, according to a release from First Niagara. 

Presented by First Niagara, the finals are a WTA event that is part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series to be held August 16-24, 2013 at the Connecticut Tennis Center.

Teams across nine divisions (Father/Child and Mother/Child 12 & Under, 14 & Under and 18 & Under age divisions; Parent/Child Open divisions for parents with children over the age of 19 or under the age of 10; and a Husband/Wife division) and representing Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York advanced following the regional finals this past weekend at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.

The regional finals were comprised of more than 150 teams who won their local events in nine different states.

The Merjians will compete for the title in their division at the New Haven Open on Thursday, August 22. Winners will be recognized on Stadium Court in a presentation that evening.
