New Canaan's Curt Casali, a catcher at Vanderbilt, was taken by the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft on Tuesday.

A senior, Casali was chosen with the 317th overall pick and could be assigned to the Connecticut Tigers, who play in the short Class A New York-Penn League.

Casali ranks second on the Commodores in doubles (20) and RBI (50), trailing only third baseman Jason Esposito, another Connecticut native who was taken in the second round by the Baltimore Orioles.

Esposito, a native of Bethany who attended Amity High School, is batting a team-high .362 with eight home runs and 55 RBI.

Casali is a .310 hitter with six homers and 50 RBI for the Commodores (50-10), who will host a Super Regional this weekend for the first time in school history.

Vanderbilt takes on Oregon State in a two-out-of-three series beginning on Friday with the winner advancing to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

According to Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin, Casali has been one of the best backstops in the highly competitive Southeastern Conference.

"There are not many kids who possess the size, arm strength and catching ability that Curt does," Corbin said. "Besides being a quality catcher, Curt has distinguished himself as one of the better offensive players in our league."

The 6-3, 220-pound Casali is the older brother of Andrew Casali, a sophomore shortstop on this year's New Canaan's team, whose season ended Tuesday with a 2-1 loss to Farmington in the CIAC Class L semifinals.

Curt Casali was named All-State in baseball 2005-07 and in football 2007, helping lead the Rams to an FCIAC baseball championship as a junior. He also quarterbacked New Canaan to a football state title as a senior.

Named the New Canaan Sportsman of the Year in 2007, Casali lettered four years in baseball, three in football and two in basketball at New Canaan.

Another Connecticut player taken in the draft was Bethel's Matt Barnes, a junior righthander from UConn who was tabbed by the Boston Red Sox in the first round with the 19th overall pick.

The New York-Penn League begins on June 17.
