New Canaan Storm Wins Another FCFSL Title

Despite being without its two best hitters, the New Canaan Storm won its third straight Fairfield County Fast Pitch Softball League title over the weekend.

The Storm went 2-1 on seeding day with wins over the Ridgefield Lightning (5-1) and Fairfield Xplosion (6-5). Against, the Xplosion, the Storm rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

On elimination day , New Canaan, which was seeded first, defeated the Ridgefield  Thunder 8-0, then won the title with a 4-1 win over the Fairfield Xplosion in the championship game.

The previous weekend, they captured the Raiders Ruckus Tournament by winning five straight games after dropping their opener.

World Rowing Junior Championships

Eight area athletes are on the U.S. national team that will compete in the World Junior Rowing Championships beginning Wednesday in Eton, Great Britain.

Included on the team are Westport's Max Meyer-Bosse (Sagatuck Rowing Club) and Alex Perkins (Kent School), who will compete in the men's eight.

In addition, Westport's Elizabeth Youngling (GMS Rowing Center) will participate in the women's quadruple sculls.

Also on the team are sisters Rosie (women's pairs) and Lucy Grinalds (women's four), who swim for the Connecticut Boat Club.

Weston's Graham Anderson and New Canaan's Chris Campbell, who swim out of the Maritime Rowing Club, qualified in the men's double sculls.

Completing the area representation is Ridgefield's Maria Mayden (GMS Rowing Center), who is a part of the women's double sculls team.

Racing begins Wednesday at 5 p.m. local time with heats in the men’s four with coxswain and women’s quadruple sculls.

At the 2010 World Rowing Junior Championships, the U.S. brought home a record four medals including gold in the men’s eight, silver in the women’s eight and women’s four, and bronze in the men’s single sculls.
