Nothing But Sunshine for Rams Girls Tennis

New Canaan will be the unquestionable top seed in the FCIAC Tournament.

The weather forced the contest indoors and two matches were canceled Tuesday due to lack of court time at the Tennis Club of Trumbull, but rain couldn't ruin the Rams girls tennis team's perfect season.

New Canaan completed an undefeated 17-0 regular season yesterday afternoon with a 4-1 win over Fairfield Warde, which was hardly a pushover, now with a 14-3 record.

Handling the adjustment to indoor play seemingly with ease, the Rams' No. 1 doubles team of Kimmy Glerum and Alyssa Baker kept their own winning streak going, with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Tara Babushkin and Hayley Smola to cap a second straight loss-less regular season.

The Rams' Kate Mannelly beat Christie Schneider in the No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-2, with crisp hitting and an impressive power game.

"I thought I played pretty well, especially from the forehand side," Mannelly said.

The Gallagher sisters didn't plan on it, but they both won by identical scores. Caitlin at No. 2 beat Haley Wolf and Courtney beat Marysa Walsh, both by 6-4, 6-3.

At No. 2 doubles, Jen Weiss and Emily Weiner posted the only win of the day for Warde. They beat Amanda Merjian and Schuyler Higgins, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

With their flawless team record, New Canaan heads into the FCIAC tournament Thursday, at home, as the No. 1 seed against the No. 8 seed—probably Ridgefield.

"The girls deserve all the credit. I'm so proud of them and, like them, can't wait for the tournament to begin," said Rams Coach Gail Overbeck.
