Rams Girls Tennis Sweeps McMahon

Coach Gail Overbeck's squad improves to 5-0.

The New Canaan girls' tennis team won its fifth straight match Wednesday, sweeping McMahon, 7-0,  at the New Canaan courts.

The Rams (5-0) lost just two games all afternoon despite being without two of their top players. No. 1 singles player Tina Tehrani was unavailable and Caitlin Gallagher, who plays No. 3 singles, is  still recovering from an injury.

Kate Mannelly, who filled in at the first singles, beat Sanjana Chintalapudi, 6-0, 6-0. In the No. 2 singles,  Courtney Gallagher bested  Shannon Kieburtz by the same score.

Freshman Jensen Lee, stepping in at the No. 3 singles, recorded a  6-1, 6-0 victory over Sydney Goldman, while another freshman, Amanda Merjian, blanked Winchelle Jean Pierre, 6-0, 6-0,  at No. 4 singles .

New Canaan's No. 1 doubles team of Kim Glerum and Alyssa Baker recorded a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Whitney Packer and Mary Rankin. Glerum and Baker were undefeated in the regular season last year, earning FCIAC MVP honors.

In the No. 2 doubles, Phoebe Wilks and Kristin Laub posted  a 6-0, 6-0 victory over  Thea Vo and Hannah Skipper. The Greene sisters—Emily and Sara—beat Arianna Bailey and Marisa Morrotta by the same score in the No. 3 doubles.

Asked if her team had trouble staying focused against an over-matched opponent, Glerum said, "We remind ourselves to keep our heads in it. There was a match last season in which we lost some games from taking our opponents too lightly, and we didn't want that to happen again."

"It's difficult sometimes to stay mentally sharp but you have to do it," Baker added. "There was one game where we played tentative today,  but we snapped out of it and stayed focused."

McMahon dropped to 0-4.

The Rams play again Thursday  at Westhill at 4 p.m.
