Rams Impressive in Lacrosse Opener

New Canaan routs Greenwich on Cardinals' home turf.

The New Canaan Rams boys lacrosse team opened its regular-season schedule Wednesday afternoon at Greenwich High School with an impressive 10-4 win.

On a day more suitable for a mid-summer baseball game, the Rams scored eight of the final 10 goals, breaking open a close game after the first quarter.

"I liked the patience and effort we showed today, especially for a first game," New Canaan coach Alex Whitten said. "The defense and J.J. Granito were outstanding today," Whitten said.

Senior Peter Krause got the ball rolling just over three minutes in. Krause scored from the left wing on the Rams' second shot of the game. Oliver Norton, one of 17 seniors on the squad, made it 2-0 on their fourth shot, but Greenwich came back with two goals in the final 38 seconds of the period.

David Dixon got one past Rams goaltender Jimmy Joe Granito and then Andrew Feeney tied the game with only five seconds remaining. The first quarter ended, 2-2.

New Canaan started to pull away in the second period after Norton scored again just over two minutes in to once again give the Rams the lead

"We slowed it down a bit in the second quarter, which also gave our defense a chance to rest," Whitten said.

Two minutes later, it was Joe Costigan on a pretty feed from Ian Knechtle. The Rams scored their third consecutive goal when Patrick Ryan burst up the middle to open up a three-goal lead.

But once again with the clock winding down, Greenwich scored. David Dixon answered with less than two minutes remaining in the half to make it 5-3 at the break.

In the third quarter, the Rams pulled away for good, extending their edge to 8-3 on a pretty goal.

Bobby Femia sped upfield under control as if he were running a gauntlet, bounced off a couple of defenders fired a nifty pass to Costigan, who buried it for a five-goal cushion.

Henry Eschricht made it 9-3 after three.

In the fourth quarter, Sam Stanton, showing some of the same moves he made in the winter season on the hockey rink, spun past a defender and beat Ryan Fisher for New Canaan's final goal.

Greenwich's Stephen Dodd scored midway through the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

"It was a big win for us against a contending team so early in the season, "Costigan said.

New Canaan's next game is at St. Joseph April 13.
