Round 1 of State Tourney Belongs to the Rams

New Canaan girls tennis looks forward to what could be a doubleheader as states continue Thursday.

After a series of scheduling and weather delays on Tuesday, New Canaan and Sheehan (Wallingford) finally got around to playing their first round contest in the state girls tennis championships on Wednesday. The No. 1 seeded Rams easily defeated No. 16 seed Sheehan, sweeping all seven matches. The Rams never lost a set and never dropped more than three games in any set.

Sheehan had a difficult road trip over the last two days. Yesterday, they won their playdown against Brookfield at NCHS. After a short break they were scheduled to get back on the courts for the first round against the Rams but after one delay due to lightning and then another shortly after the competition began, the matches were moved to Wednesday. Sheehan returned to Wallingford last evening and got back on the bus to New Canaan this afternoon—it took the team two hours to reach the courts after the driver got lost near Wilton.

Once play started it was all Rams. Most matches lasted one hour, some a few minutes more, some a few less.

The Rams will play two matches on Thursday, both at home. In the quarterfinal round scheduled to start at 12 p.m., the Rams will host No. 8 seed Suffield (15-6). In the second contest of the day, starting at 4 p.m., New Canaan, should the seeds hold up, will take on No. 4 seed Daniel Hand. The Rams were the only team to beat Hand (13-1) this season. New Canaan won the match 5-2. New Canaan is now 22-0.
