Scorecard: Rams Swimmers Finish Second at States

Twenty one teams compete for the title.

In a three-horse race between New Canaan (winners of five of the last six Class M swimming titles), Brookfield and Darien, Rams swimmers finished second at the 2010 Boys Swimming and Diving Class M finals held at Wesleyan University on Thursday.

Brookfield edged out the Rams for the top spot in the 21-team field with 464.5 points to New Canaan's 429.5 points. Darien was third with 428 points. 

Brookfield's strength in the backstroke (three swimmers finished in the top nine) was the deciding factor. They won the final event of the day—the 400-yard freestyle relay—to clinch the title.

New Canaan was the leader at the halfway point; then Darien leap frogged into the lead. But it was Brookfield who passed both New Canaan and Darien with two events left, holding on to the win after a fifth place finish last season.

Rams sophomore Austin Wolff finished first in the 100 Yard Butterfly (51.86) and took a fourth in the 200 Freestyle (1:47.9). John Santoro, another sophomore. finished in second place in the Individual Medley (1:57.24) . Patrick Sweeney, a junior, was third in the 100 Butterfly (53.00) and fifth in the 50 Freestyle (22.16).

New Canaan finished third in the 400 Freestyle Relay (Jason Potter,Karl Reinhardt, John Santoro and Austin Wolff) and in the 200 Medley Relay took a fourth place (Ian Robert, Patrick Sweeney, Gabe Lane and Jason Potter.

The swim team will compete in the CIAC Open Swimming Championships at Yale University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
