Spinu, Ashley Lead Rams XC at FCIACs

The Rams take a run through Waveny Park for the regional cross country championship.

Seventeen teams from across Fairfield County competed in the FCIAC Cross Country Championships at Waveny Park on an unseasonably warm, clear Thursday. The pool house was abuzz with student athletes stretching and joking, parents running hard to keep pace with and watch their children compete, and New Canaan police and EMTs at the ready.

It was sometimes tough to tell the difference between the brilliant fall foliage and the rush of bright jerseys as runners sprinted and kicked their way to the finish line.

New Canaan boys finished seventh in the team standings with sophomore Alex Spinu placing 15th by completing the 5K race in 17:05. Junior Brant Hoffman was the only other Ram in the top 25 out of a field of more than 130 runners, finishing 24th in 17:30.

The girls team finished tenth overall. Senior Hillary Ashley was New Canaan's top finisher, coming in 52nd overall, covering 4,000 meters in 17:30.
