NBC News Anchor Ann Curry Speaks With St. Luke's Students

On April 9, St. Luke’s students met with NBC News anchor and SLS parent, Ann Curry during the Center for Leadership’s Lunch & Lead, an informal forum for students to engage with leaders from an array of professional backgrounds.  Curry shared her passion for journalism and highlights of several life-altering interviews—including Benazir Bhutto, Maya Angelou and children from war-torn countries.  Speaking to a packed room of Upper School students, Curry said “Having met children who struggle every day to survive, reminds me how lucky we all are. Despite all the things that may seem wrong at times, you are lucky. You have the chance to go to college. You have good food to eat.”   Curry believes that those of good fortune should serve others. This belief was instilled at a young age when her father shared this advice: “Whatever you do, do something that is a service to others, because only then will you know that what you did mattered”.

St. Luke’s sixth graders also had the opportunity to hear Curry speak. She discussed the hardships of children in Sudanese refugee camps and of nations in turmoil.  Curry also encouraged every student to help whenever they see need: “Is it possible for you to help someone to suffer less in their lives? It might be someone in a far-off nation or maybe just a member of your family.  The answer is yes. You can help.  The question is, will you?” Before taking a flurry of questions, Curry told the students that they were “at one of the “coolest” and “most exciting times” of their lives: “Your brains are exploding with curiosity and you live in a generation with the internet. Anything you want to learn or do is possible.”
