St. Luke's Softball Wins FAA Crown

Top-seeded St. Luke's defeated Greenwich Academy 7-5 on Tuesday to win the FAA softball championship.

After running through the season with a 13-2 record and a number of large victories under their belt, St. Luke's looked to be the favorite coming into the FAA Championship game, hosting an upstart Gators team that had won at least part of five FAA titles in the last decade.  In their previous match-up this season, SLS picked up a tough 4-1 win on the road.

St. Luke's took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with RBI singles from sophomores Marissa Ruschil and Liz Kremer and extended it in the second with a two-run single by starting pitcher Jamie Schlim.

Greenwich Academy cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the third, and in the top of the sixth, things unraveled for the Storm.  Four errors and a double by GA's Hannah Staab helped the Gators plate three runs and take a 5-4 lead.  However, St. Luke's was ready to rebound in the bottom of the frame, and with two runners on board Ruschil belted a three run home run into right field, giving SLS a 7-5 lead.  In the top of the seventh, Schlim struck out all three batters in quick succession to pick up the win and secure the league championship for the Storm.

This championship sends head coach Camille DeMarco-Havens out on top with a final league title to close out her 32 year career.
