'Put a Shirt On'? [POLL]

Do you think people should wear shirts in public? Or is it a case of 'What's the big deal'?

Stores often have signs that say 'No shirt, no shoes, no service.' In the privacy of one's home, there's never a question. But what about in public?

Driving on New Haven Avenue this week, I noticed a gentleman riding his bicycle with no shirt on..

As summer comes to a close, where do you stand on the issue?

'Put a shirt on' or ''If the weather's warm enough, why not?'

Let us know what you think and have a great Labor Day Weekend!

in a public establishment..yes, shirt on please but on a beach, at the park, walking down a street...if your comfortable without a shirt..go for it but hve some respect and class, when you duck into a store for a water, throw on a shirt. And Women, feel free to go shirtless too if you want... lol,lol,lol...

The only shirtless place is the beach, period. I just had a discussion about this with a friend. We belong to a club and a man needed to make meal reservations and walked up to the dining area shirtless. Put a shirt on unless you are at the beach or in the pool area.

What about at the Park? or Jogging, or Biking, etc. etc? Don't be such a prude. "The only shirtless place is the beach, period."

Public nakedness is classless and unnecessary . . . it's inconsiderate of the others around you and it shows you lack judgement in the public sphere. It's no different than walking around in a "wifebeater" undershirt and projects a vile image that no one wants to be privvy to. Agree that the only places one should feel free to be shirtless are on the beach and in one's own home . . . Everywhere else is out of place.

Oh please... if someone is jogging down the street without a shirt, while it wouldn't be my choice, is it really that big of a deal? Has no one seen a bare chest or back before? Lighten up everyone.
Esprit de Corps September 06, 2012 at 10:54 PM
Excuse me, Ms. Canaanite, but the "wifebeater" undershirt you describe is also sometimes known as a singlet as part of track, rowing, weightlifting and other sports. The only difference is in the materials of construction. If people are doing heavy physical labor in hot weather they might wear "wifebeaters" in preference to no shirt at all. This could be an act of mercy to others, don't you think?
Canaanite September 07, 2012 at 03:34 PM
No, a required uniform (track, wrestling, etc) is not automatically a "wifebeater" undershirt and is NOT what I was referencing . . . I was referring specifically and only to white, men's, cotton undergarments which are meant to be worn UNDER a normal shirt or t-shirt.
Esprit de Corps September 07, 2012 at 04:59 PM
Well, Ms. Canaanite, never have I heard of anyone wearing a "wifebeater" under a T-shirt. It's like a belt and a pair of suspenders and therefore redundant. Also, it seems like female chauvenism when Angelina Jolie can wear a white "tank top" and a sweaty workman on a hot day is held to a stricter standard. I admit I personally would rather look at Angelina Jolie in a tank top but it's the principle that's important here and not the beauty, don't you think. Let's be gender neutral here. I will forgive the attractive ladies who wear white tank tops and you can forgive hairy workmen who wear "wifebeaters." Let this be our little armistice in the struggle of men and women to understand and appreciate each other. Vive la difference.
Canaanite September 07, 2012 at 06:29 PM
Well if we use your argument, then Angelina Jolie should be allowed to run around topless, shouldnt she.... and for that matter with unshaven armpits.... But alas, no, as that is seen as indecent too.
Esprit de Corps September 07, 2012 at 07:17 PM
Ms. Canaanite, you are overusing my argument to transport you to where you suggest. In fact, in some countries, women do “run around topless” and with “unshaven armpits”, but why do you bring up these examples? I do not suggest this change for New Canaan and I am surprised that you do. Please explain your logic. I am quite happy with women wearing white tank tops but the question of what they shave or don’t is not mine to answer, so I will leave that one to you. What do you advise?
