Exercise Those Aches and Pains Away

Instead of medicating your aliments, why not sweat them out with a little exercise?

Not sleeping well at night? Sore from your boot camp class yesterday? Menstrual cramps making you feel sluggish? Are you just plain run down? What's my universal remedy for these ailments? Exercise. It always makes me feel better when I am suffering from these symptoms and it may help you, too. I prefer to limit my use of over-the-counter and prescription medicine, so before I hit the local pharmacy, I hit the gym.

Nevertheless, it is important to modify the exercise for the particular aliment.

For cramps or bloating try something like yoga or Pilates. Any form of gentle stretch can help alleviate symptoms and promote relaxation—of your mind and your muscles.

Not sleeping well?  The remedy may be more about the timing of the exercise.  For instance, if bedtime is at 11 p.m., then complete your routine no later than 6 p.m., and make it an intense training session. Try that hard-core cycle class or some extreme weight training using kettle bells. Anything that will elevate your heart-rate for an extended period of time should work. By the time you are ready to hit the hay you should be good and tired. And, yes, if you are feeling sore from your workout the day before, then some modest exercise should do the trick; although be sure to focus on different muscle groups than those that are really achy. You may think that abstaining from any activity is best, but “active rest” may be just what you need. Try a short jog or bike ride, or some light resistance training. Make your decision based upon which muscles are most sore.

So, why not give it a try?  Next time you think you can’t lace up those running shoes because you’re not feeling 100 percent, do it anyway and see how you feel afterwards. Let me know if it works!
