Volunteers Package 35,000 Meals in Two Hours

Contributed by Betty J. Lovastik

On a spectacular sunny weekend volunteers throughout New Canaan poured into the cafeteria for the second annual which was held Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5.

The organizers of the event sent flyers to community churches to reach out to the New Canaan community to help package 200,000 meals to be sent to hungry children throughout the world including South America, Haiti and Africa.  Families, friends, students, church members and youth groups worked in two-hour shifts.  While music vibrated in the air,  team members scooped dried chicken, dried vegetables, soy and rice into plastic bags that were weighed, sealed, sorted and boxed.

These photos were taken during the 1:30 -  3:30 p.m. Saturday shift and included a "team" working together on Table 2.  During this time frame more than 150 dedicated volunteers packaged more than 35,000 meals!
