Caffeine and Carburetors has become a New Canaan tradition. Go to 'Caffeine and Carburetors' one Sunday at Zumbach's Coffee in New Canaan, and you will discover loads of jaw-dropping cars and motorcycles that anyone, young or old, would gawk at in pure amazement.
I have to admit that when my Dad suggest I go to my first Caffeine and Carburetors three years ago that it was the last thing I really wanted to do on a Sunday morning. I’m pretty sure I was the only girl there under 18. But since my very first time I have not missed a single one. I instantly fell in love the low slug British racers, the almost endless supply of Porsche 911s, and the sleek muscle cars looking like sharks gliding down Pine Street on an early Sunday morning.
The many cars and motorcycles have come to Caffeine and Carburetors over the years, and have created new fans just like me. Some are such standouts that even the most jaded car buff can’t help sitting up and taking notice. Such cars include the 1938 BMW 328, the 2004 Mert Lawwil Motorcycle, and 1960 Morgan 4 plus (in a stunning bright yellow) that, besides being beautiful, have impressive histories and interesting back stories.
That day, May 20, seemed like it is a very special day. The block was jammed with cars that people would search the world for, all here in our backyard. Everything from classic James Bond cars to Ford hippie vans covered the street. Doug Zumbach, owner of Zumbach's Coffee, directing each classic into its appropriate spot, next to the cars that are like it (or cars that set it off).
Looking at all the cars it’s hard to believe that Caffeine and Carburetors was not always so big. At first, there were about 20 cars at Caffeine and Carburetors in all. But as more and more car collector (an enthusiasts, like me) came, it’s gotten bigger each month. No one could believe that such a small number of people coming together - such humble beginnings - would one day result in an
extravagant car show. At the May 20th C&C, there were about 300 cars.
Caffeine and Carburetors has become a New Canaan celebration of all things automotive, and an indispensable part of the fabric of New Canaan culture.
