New Canaan Man Arrested for Assaulting His Parents

Ryan Shullman of Middle Ridge Road also broke and window and punched a hole in the wall of his parents' home, according to police.

A 39-year-old woman was arrested for leaving her children at home unattended, police said. According to Sgt. Ogrinc, the department received a call from an adult female on Country Club Road West who stated that a four-year-old girl that lived across the street wandered into her yard alone. When police arrived, they found three other children — ages 13, 10 and 1 1/2 — in the home. Police later contacted their mother Rebecca Young, who was at church. Young told police that she left the home at 1:30 p.m., but a babysitter was due to arrive at 2 p.m. The call, however, came into the department at 1:24 p.m., according to police. Love Via Dance Machine Performs at Saxe MS

An up-and-coming boy band with local connections landed in New Canaan last week to appear at RamStock battle of the bands.

Love Via Dance Machine, the up-and-coming boy band made up of Wiley Eston, Jimmy Coberly, Alex Badanes, and Izaiah Yelle performed at Saxe Middle School on Thursday night as guests at the RamStock battle of the bands. For New Canaan native Badanes, it was more than another gig, it was a chance to return to his old middle school. “We were on a high school tour, this is our last stop for a week and then we’re doing a run of middle schools,” Badanes said. “It’s cool, we reach a lot of people who may not have heard our music. Then we have fans who already know us and think it’s cool that we’re playing at their school.” The four met their first year at Berklee College of Music — Badanes hailing from New Canaan, Eston from Redding, Coberly from …

New Canaan SportsBeat: Things That Made Me Go, 'Wow!'

Shining the spotlight on awe-inspiring performances.

Bethel High School graduate Matt Barnes has made a lot of people in professional baseball say, "Wow!" The first-round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2011 MLB Draft has been a force this season. In eight starts between Greenville and Salem, the hard-throwing pitcher is 4-0 with a barely visible, 0.60 ERA. In 44 2/3 innings, Barnes has given up just three earned runs while striking out 67 and walking just six batters. Those are incredible numbers across the board. Max Pacioretty of New Canaan turned in a brilliant performance for Team USA in the IIHF World Hockey Championships in Helsinki over the last two weeks. The forward, who plays for the Montreal Canadians during the NHL season, was the seventh leading scorer in the tournament and …

And, Blumenthal delivers commencement address to University of Hartford graduates.

BLUMENTHAL: The senator delivered a commencement address to nearly 1,100 graduates from the University of Hartford on Sunday. "I don’t doubt that my generation will leave a lot of unfinished business for you graduates and others,” he said, “but I also have no doubt that you will live up to this challenge, you will fulfill that compact, you will serve and give back.” LIEBERMAN: The senator told The Hill recently that because an international peace plan to end violence in Syria is failing, the Obama administration might consider a military response. "It's our moral obligation to help them," Lieberman said. DELAURO: The congresswoman released a statement in response to the approval of an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act …

New Canaan Teen Could Face Six Months If Convicted in Jogger Death

Connecticut, one of the national leaders in driver safety advocacy, is one of 31 states as well as Washington, D.C., that ban all cellphone use by new drivers, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association

A 16 year old female New Canaan driver was placed under arrest, last week, after police said that she was distracted by the use of a handheld cell phone which resulted in her hitting and fatally injuring a 44-year-old jogger. The death of Kenneth Dorsey of Norwalk and the subsequent criminal charges against the 16-year-old driver come as other states are considering measures to force both teenagers and adults to discontinue using cell phones and other electronic devices when operating a motor vehicle. Mr. Dorsey, an experienced runner, was training for a marathon and out on a morning jog when he was fatally struck by a teen driver who was operating an SUV. @mary Parker. The cell law and seat belt law doesn't apply to police. I asked a Darien cop, and he said they are exempt from the law. That they could be using their cell phones for official police matters. Nice, huh?   more ›

McMahon Says Shays Should Drop Out

Congressman Shays, however, says getting to the primary was "the second stage" in his bid for retiring US Sen. Joe Lieberman's seat.

After winning the Republican Party endorsement for a second campaign for U.S. Senate, former CEO of WWE and Greenwich resident Linda McMahon is now urging GOP rival and former US Congressman Christopher Shays to drop out of the race. "I would really hope that Congressman Shays would... understand how more effective it would be if we were a unified party moving forward now to take on Congressman Murphy," McMahon said on WFSB-TV's "Face the State" on Sunday. McMahon garnered 730 votes, or 60.4 percent of delegates during the the state Republican Convention in Hartford Friday night, while Shays netted 389 votes, or 32.2 percent — enough to force a primary. In a separate segment on "Face the State" Shays said getting to the primary was "the …
