The Ventura twins, Jordan (l) and Cydney (r) have the Lady Rams in the mix for an FCIAC, and possibly State Championship.

Great story. These girls are so poised. Nice to hear how they played for the joy of the game and theRead More competition, even as they are ready to put playing competitively aside in college. Good luck—hope you get to the championship!

Officer Ruddy is superwoman with a badge and if superwoman had a partner Amanda would be her.

I agree with Chuck's comments about the barriers (unless there's a safety reason of which we are notRead More aware), but otherwise I thought the commute went smoothly this morning. I only had to wait a few minutes for a shuttle to Westport and then was on my way.

Can somebody tell me what purpose was served by MetroNorth (or Fairfield) PD putting barriers onRead More both stairs on the Fairfield station (Unqowa Rd) overpass? All this does is force commuters to walk all the way around the station to access the buses. Makes no sense. Put yellow tape to block access to the platform itself but NOT the stairways into/out of the station.

As a child of the 60's the hippie in me loves to see that "question authority" is stillRead More alive an well. I think what you are doing is fabulous. Anyone who doesn't appreciate the work you have done to end corruption in NC is likely friends with someone in the town government or has something to hide.

I read that Jim Cameron --the darien native and commuter rail chair is asking , to accommodateRead More displaced train riders--that parking rules be suspended so that these people have a place to park. TERRIBLE IDEA. Come on Jim!! At all of these parking lots there are never more than a handful of empty spots. All you are going to accomplish by waiving the parking rules is to allow people from (fill in the blank) to park in a spot paid for by a person who lives in (fill in the blank.) So people who commute after 745am will have no where to park. Solving nothing except transferring the problem from one person to the next. Jim--think this through. It's not like , for example, Noroton Heights has an extra 200 spots that go idle.

Porter, How quickly you forget what you've already ready. No doubt that's do to that fact that youRead More don't wish to admit the truth to yourself. It's called dodging and misdirection what you're doing. The first link that I provided you showed that in 2010 it was 42%. The second link that I provided you with showed that in 2007 it was 51%, before putting back in diverted monies which would bring it back up to 65%. I'm sorry Sir, but the only one being dishonest here is YOU! -------- As for zeroing in when the tax was last raised, I only did that because you questioned my time line, again because you weren't paying attention to what you read. ----------- So once again, go back to the Subsidyscope link, which provides you with a nice pretty picture of the funding since the start of the Interstate Highway System. It quite clearly shows that we've never gotten as high 90% in the entire history of the Interstate Highway System. -------- And once again, since the Federal fuel tax was diverted from its primary purpose of paying down out national debt, as enacted back in 1932 by then President Herbert Hoover, the real truth is that the numbers are ever lower than what is shown in the Subsidyscope graph. Since you like to claim that the money diverted to transit should count, I'm going to claim that every dime in Federal money was not paid for by drivers since it was diverted from paying on the debt as was intended.
Porter Gladstone III May 21, 2013 at 04:09 am
Ahblid, "if you had read fully." 65 or 51 --which one equals 42 as you claim? We wereRead More talking about subsidies and now you are zeroing in on when it was raised as opposed to how much has been allocated to highways? Why? In any event, your style has exposed a level of dishonesty, so i did my own internet surfing....and found time after time this: The Interstate Highway System was built without a dime of subsidy, being funded entirely with gas taxes and other highway-user fees; For the last 60 years virtually no federal money and very little state money other than highway-user fees have been spent on any highways or roads; Cities and counties, however, do spend property, income, and sales taxes subsidizing new local roads and street maintenance; But these subsidies are partly offset by diversions of federal and state highway-user fees to mass transit and other nonhighway programs; Bottom line: user fees cover nearly 90 percent of the total amount spent on highway construction, maintenance, and operations. So, since the last 60 years no federal money has been spent and of course when new developments in towns require new roads property taxes go to build those roads- Sorry --your statement is false.
ahblid May 20, 2013 at 01:06 pm
Porter, I'm not off by a few years at all. Notice that the article stated "The amount ofRead More federal fuel tax allocated to highway purposes has not increased since 1997". It didn't say that the fuel tax had gone up! The last increase to the fuel tax was 1993. However, back in 1990 when President George H W Bush increased the fuel tax, he sent 2.5 cents of the increase back to the original purpose of the Federal fuel tax, paying down our national debt. In 1993 when President Bill Clinton increased the tax again, he added another 2.5 cents for paying down our debt. ------------ In 1997, Congress redirected that nickle back into the Highway Trust Fund. -------- Next, those studies include both Federal & State spending & fuel taxes. The Fed only spends about $50 Billion per year on highways. The other $150 Billion is the State spending. ---------- As for some of the money going to public transportation, had you read the article fully, you would have noticed that adding back in those funds would still only get us drivers to 65%, from the 51% reported for 2007. So we drivers are still getting a subsidy no matter how you want to slice it. And seeing as how the entire Federal fuel tax was originally diverted from its primary purpose of paying down on our debt in 1956 to the highways, crying about diversions of money that was already diverted in the first place doesn't wash. ----------- Finally, enough with the unions. It changes nothing towards the original point that I was making to Godbully so many posts ago, that both train riders and drivers get subsidies. And it's not an argument, it's a fact. I didn't say that unions continue today because employers take advantage, even though it is true that they would do so in a heart beat, I said and I quote: "Unions exist today only because employers used to take advantage of employees." Please note the key words "only" and "used to".

Alice-- I am fully confident that my convictions will be overturned on appeal. Your references toRead More me are inappropriate, because I was granted a full right to citizenship after posting an appeal bond. Then, those who made posts referencing me in the manner you have, will no longer be entitled to disparage me without a factual basis of reference. Yesterday, I was at the graduation ceremony at Lesley University in Boston and heard the noted historian and writer David McCullough speak after he was awarded a honorary degree. The works of David McCullough are important works of historical significance and he spoke to the students from Lesley and those in attendance, estimated at over 5,000 about the importance of citizenship. McCullough said that if you believe there is corruption in government, throw the public officials out of office. McCullough's blunt assessment was a compelling affirmation of this noted historian's respect for our democratic institutions. Perhaps Mr. McCullough's remarks may be captured on a CD and posted on my website soon as a reminder to all of us to be vigilant on the operations of our government.

Can convicted felons run for office in New Canaan?

But Alice, my point is that if we can't trust our elected officials to respect the elderly, what canRead More we trust them with? In my mind it goes to character, which concerns me. Mr. Nowacki has rights too. Your character assassinations do not change the facts of the illegal actions of our town leaders, including the Board of Ed.
Alice Maritis May 18, 2013 at 11:15 pm
And, I'm less concerned about illegal parking than I am about a convicted felon, who has been barredRead More from entering schools and town buildings (and sues people just because he has the right to) to be elected to our Town Council. If he can't have a civil conversation with the current employees, how do you think he will conduct himself with residents that might accuse him of wrongdoing? Will anyone speak up against him without fear of being sued for something?
Alice Maritis May 18, 2013 at 11:11 pm
If he was doing all of this for the sake of the residents of New Canaan, that would be one thing,Read More but he's not. He has been witch hunting in the NCPS and town government since he felt "wronged" by their blocking him from entering the schools many years ago. If anybody other than him had tried bringing attention to town problems, they probably would have been heard and been treated as credible. When someone has been harassing residents and town employees for years and years and years, how do you think they will be treated?
