Bronx Man Arrested in New Canaan ATM Skimming Scheme

Police say Adrian Abagiu was seeking to install a device at Chase Bank on Main Street that's designed to steal money from ATM users.

New Canaan police arrested a 30-year-old Bronx, NY man by warrant Saturday night after thwarting what they're calling his plan to steal money from ATM users at a local bank. According to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc, the department’s public information officer, Adrian Abagiu was arrested at 9:45 p.m. and charged with two counts of second-degree criminal attempt at larceny, two counts of third-degree criminal attempt at identity, two counts of criminal possession of an access device to obtain personal identifying information, second-degree forgery and interfering with an officer. The arrest was the culmination about 10 days’ work among New Canaan police, Connecticut Financial Crimes Task Force and Connecticut State Police, Ogrinc said. Investigators …

A snapping turtle found in a parking lot at 447 Purdy Hill Road in Monroe at 11:26 a.m. on May 16 was captured and released in a location that is safe from traffic, according to police. More sightings should soon be expected, because June is known as "Snapping Turtle Month", a time when female turtles leave the water and travel several miles on land, so they can lay their eggs.   While officials worked to discover the cause of her death, friends remember Bedford resident Mary Richardson Kennedy in life as an energetic professional and warm, caring individual. "She was very easy to talk to and so supportive of our work," said Brian Skanes, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club in Mt. Kisco. Kennedy was involved in the nonprofit organization for several years as a volunteer on the club's annual fundraising dinner. When she heard about the club's Youth of the Year awards, she volunteered to host the event at her home. Exterminator Charged in New Canaan Scam Arrested Again

Greenwich police charge exterminator in case of switching expensive diamond with 'a lesser quality" stone in client's home.

  An exterminator who was arrested by New Canaan police in February on a larceny charge was arrested again on Wednesday — but this time by Greenwich police. He is accused of switching an expensive diamond from the ring of a Greenwich client with a stone of lesser quality. George Lawrence, 41, who gave an address of 156 Wake St., Bridgeport, surrendered May 15 to police who obtained an arrest warrant charging him with first-degree larceny in connection with the Dec. 29, 2010 incident. Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said, "He switches diamonds with a lesser quality diamond with the intent to mislead the owner it is the same ring." Police were called to "an unattended death" at 1:36 p.m. in an out-building on the property.

Updated, 6:05 p.m. Thursday The Westchester County Medical Examiner's office released a statement Thursday afternoon saying Mary Kennedy's cause of death was asphyxiation due to hanging. Updated, 11:40 a.m. Thursday The New York Times is reporting that Kennedy's body was found hanging in a barn behind their home and that authorities who responded to the scene had attempted to cut her down and revive her. Although she is 16 years old, seriousness of charge requires she be prosecuted in state Superior Court.

  NORWALK—A 16-year-old New Canaan girl accused of striking and killing a jogger while driving an SUV in March will be prosecuted as an adult. The charge against her of negligent homicide with a motor vehicle requires she be tried in state Superior Court, rather than Juvenile Court. The accident occurred the morning of March 24 on New Canaan Avenue. An affidavit Norwalk Police prepared to obtain an arrest warrant for her alleges she was using her iPhone to look at the New Canaan High School website when she struck the jogger, 44-year-old Norwalk resident Kenneth Dorsey. Narcotics and DUI Arrests in New Canaan

Teens are charged with possession of marijuana while two others are arrested for driving under the influence.

  A Bridgeport man was arrested on May 7 for allegedly driving while intoxicated with three children in his car, police said. Willie J. Langley, Jr., 34, was stopped on East Avenue near Hoyt Street after an officer on New Norwalk Road determined that the items hanging in the driver’s rear view mirror were obstructing his view, said Sgt. Carol Ogrinc. Upon stopping Langley’s vehicle, the officer reported smelling alcohol coming from Langley, who subsequently submitted to and failed a field sobriety test, police said. Police also allegedly found an empty gin bottle and an unopened bottle of rum, said Ogrinc. New Canaan Teen Charged with Negligent Homicide in SUV vs. Jogger Death

Norwalk man, who was jogging along New Canaan Ave., died in March after he was transported to the hospital.

NORWALK—A 16-year-old New Canaan girl was arrested by warrant Saturday, accused of striking a jogger with her SUV in March that resulted in fatal injuries. The girl, who authorities can't identify because of her age, was charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, use of a handheld telephone by someone under 18 years old, and failure to drive in the proper lane. She came to police headquarters after being told officers had obtained a warrant for her arrest. She will be prosecuted in Juvenile Court in Bridgeport, which is not open to the public. New Canaan Residents Hit With Fraudulent Accounts

Residents received overdue account notices from fraudulent AT&T and Paypal accounts.

  Police are investigating a South Avenue resident's complaint that an AT&T account was falsely opened in his name, police said.  A collections representative contacted the 74-year-old man to inform him that an account in his name was overdue $191.31, said Sgt. Carol Ogrinc. The man reported the incident to New Canaan police on may 11, police said.  The fraudulent account, which was closed on March 16 due to non-payment, was opened with a West Palm Beach, Fla. address, police said.   A woman is accused of stealing $1,084 in merchandise from Kohl's in Trumbull on May 6. Police said she put clothing in bags, entered a dressing room and walked out holding the bags. Her bond was set at $7,500. *** A man was charged for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license after he slowly fell off his moped while driving down the Post Road in Fairfield. Police also found a bag of pot in the man’s pocket. *** An adult female opossum nearly died after it was hit by a car in front of a supermarket in Monroe this week, officers with the town's Animal Control unit say.
