Police Blotter: Warrants Served; Vehicle Larceny Reported

One motorist turns himself in on DUI charges, a UPS driver for failing to appear for driving with a suspended license.

UPS Driver Failed to Appear on Traffic Charges: Jarred Allen, 31, of Norwalk, turned himself in Wednesday, March 10, at 3:27 p.m. after failing to appear in court March 1 on motor vehicle charges. He posted $500 bond and is due back in court March 23. Allen had been issued a summons Dec. 10, 2009, for driving with a suspended license. He allegedly struck a mailbox structure in New Canaan while operating a UPS truck and didn't report it right away.   GPS Stolen From Unlocked Car: A New Canaan resident called police at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday to report that someone had snatched a Garmin Nuvi 265 worth $190 from her vehicle earlier in the day. INJURY ACCIDENT: Driver Complains of Pain After Rear-Ending Bus: The driver of an SUV that rear-ended a school bus dropping of a student on Smith Ridge Road Wednesday, March 10, later complained of arm pain. The incident was the only accident involving injuries logged in last week. UPDATED: Almost All Roads Fully Open and Cleared

Trees and power lines had left dozens of streets blocked.

After the disatrous storm Saturday, almost all the roads in New Canaan are now fully passable—just two remain partially closed. This list of roads with known hazards has grown as more information has been compiled. There may still be debris along other streets so motorists should continue to use caution. Did we miss any? Wind, Rain, Sirens, and Cancellations

Stormy weather brings down branches and wires all over town.

The Fire Department got so many calls Saturday afternoon that they had to call additional manpower to the firehouse. The reports of alarms sounding, wires down and transformer fires started coming in around 1:30 p.m. and just kept coming, with at least three dozen logged so far.  According to Connecticut Light & Power's outage report, more than 65 percent of New Canaan customers, 5,493 as of 11:05 a.m. Sunday, were in the dark (except those with working generators, of course).  Meanwhile, the state Department of Transportation posted alerts about wires and trees on major roadways, including some that shutdown the Merritt Parkway southbound between exits 41 and 40 B at 3:05 p.m. and northbound between exits 34 and 35 at 4:46 p.m.  The …

I have also heard that about the CL&P crews. I also just got a report that Valley Road and Turner Hill are closed due to wires down at that intersection. If you decide to go out tonight, expect to encounter road blocks and non-working traffic lights.  more ›

Fire Log: Pesky Leak; Handful of Other Calls

Not too many sirens in the past week.

Persistent Gasoline Problem:  The Fire Department got two more calls from a house on White Birch Road reporting the smell of gasoline and a film over a nearby brook Tuesday and Wednesday morning this week. The state Department of Environmental Protection has been monitoring a leak from the Mobil Station near exit 37 of the Merritt Parkway, which is in the neighborhood's vicinity.    Accident Over the Norwalk Border:  New Canaan firefighters were dispatched to a traffic accident on New Norwalk Road near Carter Street at 5:16 p.m. Sunday, March 7, but it turned out the incident had occurred on the Norwalk side of the street. Emergency Services Win Federal Grants

More than $45,000 in competitive grant funds will go to New Canaan's firefighters and EMTs.

The New Canaan Fire Department got word last month that it had been awarded $34,672 to purchase protective gear and equipment; today Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman announced the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps will get $11,773 for training. Both competitive grants are being issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.  The Fire Department plans to use the money to purchase 12 sets of gear for volunteer firefighters (coats, pants, helmets, boots, and gloves), 16 traffic vests, nine bailout harnesses for volunteers, two sets of bailout training equipment, and FireTRAX software (think electronic dog tags). UPDATED: SUV Hits School Bus

No one was hurt in the crash.

An SUV rear-ended a stopped school bus on Smith Ridge Road Wednesday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. Nineteen New Canaan High School and Saxe Middle School students were on the bus, but no one was hurt in the accident.  The bus was dropping off a student, with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing, when it got slammed. The impact pushed the bus forward and caused some minor damage: a shattered window on the bus's rear emergency door and a dented bumper. The SUV didn't fare as well—its whole front-end was crushed.  A few of the kids called parents for curb-side pick-up, the rest were taken home in another bus. The Accident Report—Week of March 1

NCPD logged five accidents involving property damage in the past week.

PROPERTY DAMAGE ACCIDENTS:  Two-Car Crash at Stop Sign:  On Monday, March 1, at 12:14 p.m. a vehicle pulling out of Maple Street struck another vehicle on South Avenue. The driver deemed at fault told police she had pulled out thinking that the other vehicle was turning onto Maple; she was cited for failure to grant right-of-way at a stop sign. Both vehicles had to be towed.  Car Hits Deer:  A car hit a deer around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, March 4, near the intersection of Smith Ridge Road and North Wilton Road. Thousands in Jewelry Reported Stolen: A resident of Avalon Drive East called police Monday, March 1, to report that about $9,500 worth of jewelry had been stolen from her condo sometime between Jan. 1 and Feb. 27. Among the items missing are a diamond ring with heart-shaped diamonds ($4,500), a pearl necklace ($4,000), a gold pin depicting two swans ($500), a gold ring with five birth stones ($100), another gold ring with four birth stones ($100), and a silver and gold colored watch ($300). There was evidence of forced entry. Fire Log: One Big Gasoline Mess, A Dozen Minor Calls

Mobil Station's problem continues to plague neighborhood.

More Gasoline Along White Birch Road:  Around 8 a.m. Monday, March 1, firefighters responded to White Birch Road where residents were again complaining about a strong smell of gasoline and a film visible on the nearby brook. The pollution is emanating from the Mobil Station near exit 37 on the Merritt Parkway, which is on state-owned land. The Fire Marshal contacted the state Department of Environmental Protection.
