New Canaan boys hockey holds off a late rally to defeat East Haven 6-3.
The East Haven Yellow Jackets came out in the third period of Wednesday night's CIAC first round playoff game playing like their season was on the line; that's because it was. They had fallen behind the Rams 5-0 after the first two periods, and had nothing to lose by going all out. "They're a bunch of tough, gritty kids and they play a lot of ice hockey," said New Canaan head coach Bo Hickey. "Five (goals) sometimes isn't enough, and it almost wasn't tonight." Facing elimination East Haven came out and scored three fast goals, putting the pressure on the Rams. Matt Barcomb made the score 5-3 with just under nine minutes remaining, forcing New Canaan to step up the defense. Freshman goalie Tim Nowacki responded by stonewalling numerous …

New Canaan and Darien both make 20 shots-on-goal, one gets through for the Rams.
The state championship was still up for grabs with less than two minutes remaining in regulation time Saturday at the Ingalls Rink on the campus of Yale University. New Canaan and Darien were in a "pitcher's battle"—a scoreless game with overtime 1:43 away. Darien was on a power play, with Bea Eppler in the penalty box, when the New Canaan's Olivia Hompe collected the puck at center ice after a weird bounce. The freshman skated in on Blue Wave goalie Katharine Macomber when Ellie Bullitt, in trying to catch her, was whistled for taking Hompe down. New Canaan was awarded a penalty shot. Darien was assessed another penalty, a two-minute minor, for hitting Hompe after the whistle. Hompe took the puck down the left side, dropped her left …
New Canaan denies Ridgefield an upset.
The New Canaan Rams won the FCIAC Championship game on Saturday night with a 6-1 win over the Ridgefield Tigers at the Terry Conners Rink. The win came a few hours after the New Canaan girls beat Darien 1-0 for the State Championship at the Ingalls Rink at Yale. The Tigers made it into the championship game with a 3-2 upset win over second seed Greenwich and for two periods against New Canaan they were in position to pull off another one. But the Rams would have none of it and with a 2-1 lead after two periods, the Rams put together a four-goal final period for their win. The Rams scored two short-handed goals in the third (three in the game) and two more goals at even strength. "The two goals they scored short-handed in the third period…

New Canaan will now aim for their second title win of the year against Darien.
New Canaan moves into the State Championship game with a win over the Hall-Conard co-op team on Friday night at Yale's Ingalls Rink. As they had when they played the Huskies from West Hartford in an out-of-conference game early in the season, the Rams won by three goals (this time it was a 3-0 shutout), but it didn't come easy. New Canaan showed great perseverance as they dominated play from wire to wire. It appeared that New Canaan was playing most of the game on power plays as they peppered Huskies goalie Rosie Gluck with 15 first-period shots. But the dimunitive Gluck was outstanding in turning away everything the Rams threw at her. Most of the attempts were from high scoring areas, but Gluck always seemed to be squared to the puck, …

New Canaan Girls Basketball's season ends in Southbury despite Sarah Mannelly's best efforts.
It didn't take very long to see why Pomperaug had a 23-1 record and a No. 1 ranking in the state. They're talented, athletic, tall and well coached. They beat New Canaan on Thursday night on their home court in their Class L second-round game, 67-51, despite not being able to stop Sarah Mannelly. Mannelly scored over half of the Rams points—27—mostly on drives with some long range shooting sprinkled in, but New Canaan, after a competitive first period couldn't match the Panthers in size or talent. New Canaan had no answer for the 6'2" senior, Katie Cizynski who'll be playing at Fairfield University next season. She's the leading scorer in Pomperaug history, breaking the record this season that has stood for 30 years. Rams coach Kim Palmer …
Christian Higgins turns on his record-breaking breast stroke.
With an All-American on the squad, a good finish at the FCIAC Swimming Championship was definitely a possibility for the Rams. But not even they were expecting to finish third. "We really just got it done in the water," said New Canaan head coach Jason Paige. The top finisher for the Rams was Christian Higgins, who finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke with an automatic All-American qualifying time of 57.71 and second in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.26. Also taking home first was the 200 Medley Relay team, which Higgins was a part of. "Higgins was great tonight," Paige said. "We're extremely happy with how we did." The top team on the evening was the Greenwich Cardinals, who took first place with a dominating 408 total points. …
