2nd Annual Dog Days a Howling Success

You could have called us 'New Canine' for the day.

Dogs, demonstrations, vendors, vets, people and pets came together to celebrate our canine companions on a sunny summer Sunday.   By all measures the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce's 2nd annual Dog Days of Summer celebration was a huge success.

UPDATE: Dog Dies After Run-in With Coyote

Animal control officer warns that with limited natural prey, coyotes may turn to household pets.

Please keep an eye on your pets; there are coyotes on the prowl in New Canaan. My small terrier died Saturday morning following surgery to repair wounds he sustained during an encounter with a coyote Thursday night. I woke that night to urgent knocking on my bedroom door about 10:30 p.m.  My teenaged son was calling for Crash to come in when he was startled by yelps and snarls a short distance away. Adrenaline racing, I threw on a coat, grabbed a flashlight, and together we headed in the direction of where he'd heard the sounds. As we approached we heard leaves rustling, which we later realized was the predator in retreat. But then they discovered that the small Beagle had found her way into a storm basin and was trapped. Puppy Rescued from Storm Basin

A puppy is safe after a long ordeal Sunday.

Ten-month-old beagle puppy Brandy didn't come when Jennifer Forese called her three dogs in from the yard around noon on Sunday, but she didn't think much of it. The property on Summersweet Ln is fenced in and she usually lets the dogs in and out of the house at their leisure. Around 5 p.m., after going out for soccer practice and other Sunday afternoon activities, Forese rallied her four sons to look for the puppy. At that point, she thought maybe Brandy had dug a hole under the fence or otherwise snuck out of the yard. Three hours later, still no sign of the puppy. Forese brought her family in to have dinner, finish homework, and get ready for bed, and called the Police Department to say if they found the puppy, who was not wearing a …
