Westminster Handler Just a Young Pup Herself
A 13-year-old New Canaanite and her long-eared spaniels challenge the best in adult competition.
It's easy to see Micah's appeal for 13-year-old Hayley Hendrick and why the seventh grader teamed up with him to compete at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden this week. The three-year old dog has long floppy ears, resplendent with luxuriant silken strands of shiny black hair that invite stroking. With his upturned nose and enormous, fiercely intent brown eyes, 20-pound Micah is a champion among his breed of royal English lapdog—formally a Cavalier King Charles spaniel. Last October, Micah captured "Best Cavalier" in an all-Cavalier show hosted by the Delaware Valley Cavalier Club in Pennsylvania. His handler Hayley was a rarity too, competing against adults with years of experience as a middle school student. …
