Marinelli Wins 250th As New Canaan Football Rolls

Matt Milano throws six touchdown passes asthe Rams rout St. Joseph 43-14 to improve to 6-0

The New Canaan football team made sure that Lou Marinelli would not have to do much sweating en route to his 250th victory at the school.

In his , Marinelli reached the milestone with a 43-14 victory over St. Joseph on Saturday afternoon at Dunning Stadium, a game in which senior quarterback Matt Milano threw six touchdown passes.

Marinelli, who has guided the Rams to eight state championships and four FCIAC crowns, improved his career mark at New Canaan to 250-84-6. Including one season at Mamaroneck and two at Yorktown before arriving at New Canaan in 1981, Marinelli boasts an overall record of 269-91-7.

With the 269 wins, Marinelli has passed the late Jerry McDougall (265) to move into third on the state's all-time win list. He trails Bill Mignault (321) and West Haven's Ed McCarthy, who had 301 wins at the start of the season.

Last year, St. Joseph handed New Canaan its only loss of the regular season with a 28-27 victory in Trumbull. But this year's Cadets' team is a shell of the squad that captured a second straight CIAC Class S state championship in 2010 as virtually all of the key offensive components graduated, including record-setting quarterback Joe Della Vecchia.

Saturday's contest was over early with Milano putting on a show. Five of his TD passes went to Patrick Newton as the seventh-ranked Rams improved to 6-0. The state record for TD receptions in a game is six.

St. Joseph, which defeated Harding 40-12 last week for its first win of the season, dropped to 1-5.

The Rams raced to 36-0 halftime lead, and it was like Milano and Newton were playing a game of catch with each other as they hooked for touchdowns of 31, 26, 35, 76 and 6 yards.

In the second half, Milano fired a 6-yard TD pass to Connor Kilbane, giving New Canaan a 43-0 lead.

St. Joseph got a pair of meaningless late scores on Pat Boyle's 52-yard pass to Shane Miller and backup Shea Olayos' 26-yard TD strike to Mark Hirschbeck.
