New Canaan OEM Participates in State-Wide Drill, Prepares for Summer Exercise

The New Canaan Office of Emergency Management and, as part of the OEM, the New Canaan Fire Department, participated in a test of their emergency procedures Wednesday as they took part in a state-wide emergency preparedness exercise.

"We went through our technology and the plans we have laid out," said Officer of Emergency Management Director Mike Handler, who described the fictitious event as a prolonged power outage. "It's always helpful to go through those motions, but it helped as we're also feverishly planning for our August 8 drill."

The office will participate in an active shooter scenario this summer involving federal and state agencies to see test best practices when faced with such a dangerous situation.

"[Thursday] was a live exercise in a portion of region five," Handler said. "We more-or-less supported those efforts. We didn't actually move any assets or resources from our region to five. But it showed the towns are well prepared. A prolonged outage is nothing new to us. We handled it the last time and we're be prepared for the next one."
