The Little Things: Hanging Baskets Downtown

Here's a big thank-you to the New Canaan Beautification League for doing so many little things that improve our town and lives. Today we focus on the hanging baskets downtown.

Here in the feature "The Little Things," we give a nod to those small acts of consideration or kindness that make a big difference in New Canaan. If you've got an idea for a future post or snap a pic of something worth sharing for "The Little Things," email New Canaan editor Lisa Buchman at lisab@patch.com.

To start, who doesn't love the whole idea of the New Canaan Beautification League? A volunteer group whose priority is to enhance the town's beauty.

The league—which on April 24-25 is hosting its fundraiser, "TABLESCAPES 2013, A GARDEN PARTY" (read more in their blog post here)—is responsible among other things for the flower baskets that hang from the Chamber of Commerce-purchased lampposts downtown.

As First Selectman Rob Mallozzi says in the attached video, these baskets are "stunning" and add "character, class and beauty" to our business district. I'm attaching a photo that I snapped last summer of three league members manning a tent at the sidewalk sales. (Because the baskets can obstruct signs on lampposts detailing parking limits, the first selectman also tells us that this spring and summer, the league is being asked to leave every fifth of sixth lamppost bare—see video.)

In the past here in our "The Little Things" feature we've given a nod to the bench outside Elm Street Books, a turkey on Parker's Glen and the library dive-thru book drop. The beautification league's work, and in this case their hanging baskets, absolutely deserve a nod as one of those little things that make a big difference in New Canaan. Thank you for all you do!
