Police Blotter: Police Believe Four Burglaries in Three Days May Be Related

Police reports for Sept. 14 - 20, 2010.

The following arrest information was supplied by the New Canan police department. It does not indicate convictions.

Burglaries: Police believe the following four items may be related. Investigations into these incidents are continuing.   

Police received a report that some time between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Mon., Sept. 20 a home on Michigan Rd. was burgled.  There was no sign of forced entry. It is believed a door was left unlocked. The residence does have an alarm, but it was not set. At this time the items stolen reported are two MacBook computers valued at approximately $2,000 each, an iPad valued at approximately $700 and an undetermined amount of jewelry valued at approximately $30,000.

On Sept. 18 at 10:22 p.m. police received a report from the keyholder of a Ramhorne Rd. residence that the alarm had been tripped and the homeowner had requested he check the property. The keyholder noticed a broken screen in the front of the house and called police.  Police found a window that had been forced on the side of the house and the master bedroom had been rummaged through.  The resident reported jewelry missing, but has not provided a complete list to police.

Officers responding to an 11:16 p.m. call from a Smith Ridge Rd. resident on Sept. 18 noticed an open rear door, with no signs of forced entry.  The master bedroom had been rummaged through and the victims, a couple in their 60's, believe some jewelry may be missing. An itemized report has not been filed yet.  The homeowners think it is possible they left a rear door open when they went out earlier in the evening.

At 7:26 p.m. on Sept. 19, a 40-year-old resident of Stonehenge Dr. reported a forced entry.  The homeowners had left the house on Fri., Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m. and returned home on Sun., Sept. 19 at 4:30 p.m. They dropped off luggage and went to a party without checking the house.  They returned from the party at 7:00 p.m. and discovered a number of stolen items. 

When police arrived they found an unlocked rear window screen had been cut and the window was open. The homeowners reported $70,000 worth of jewelry missing, including a three stone diamond ring valued at $30,000, a second ring valued at $12,000, and three yellow gold bracelets, one with sapphire stones, value undisclosed.  The residents had locked the doors when they were away for the weekend, but had not set the alarm. 

Disappearing Duvets

On Sept. 14, police responded to a 9:04 a.m. call from a Richmond Hill Rd. resident who said two duvet covers, valued at $500 each, had been taken the day before.  The complainant, a 54-year-old female, said she had opened her detached garage door at 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 13 for her garbage company.  The garbage and recycling bins were left in the garage and the duvet covers were in a bright orange shopping bag about four feet away from the bins.  The garage door was ajar when the resident left her home at 6:45 a.m. She returned at 7:15 a.m., to discover the garbage had been removed and the bag was missing.   An investigation is continuing.

 

Warrant Service for Failure to Appear in Court on Motor Vehicle Charges

On Sept. 16 a warrant was served on Nicole M. West, 23, of Bridgeport for failure to appear 2nd degree. West had missed an Aug. 9 court date for an arrest on motor vehicle charges on March 11, 2010.  West posted $3,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 28.

 

Co-Workers in Dispute

On Sept. 17 police responded to a 911 call about an argument between two Millport Ave. neighbors.  The caller said Kennth J. Pinder, 54, was in the home of a 48-year-old neighbor, and was engaged in  a verbal argument with the neighbor. Pinder was still at the home when police arrived. He had threatened the other man and had "thrown some things around the house," according to the police report. Pinder was charged with disorderly conduct and threatening, 2nd degree and was released at the scene. He has a Sept. 27 court date.  Both men are employees of the New Canaan Highway Department.

 

Victim of Fraud

 A 56-year-old Carter St. resident notified police on Sept. 17 that he had been the victim of identity theft.  His bank had contacted him to say there had been unusual activity on an account that morning.  Someone had taken enough information to obtain a new debit card in the victim's name and had made three separate  transactions totaling $21,900. The transactions were made out of state. An investigation is continuing.

 

Painting Missing from Library

On the afternoon of Sept. 17 police were notified that an oil painting had been taken from the New Canaan library.  The 8" x 10" painting is owned by the artist, a 70-year-old female from Milford, Conn,. and was part of a show on display at the library.  At 3:30 on the 17th the artist went to the gallery to look at a sign-in book and she noticed that the picture, entitled "Bay Window (Study)," was missing.  The painting is in a light wood color frame and is valued at $2,500.

 

Items Taken from Car at Waveny Park

On the afternoon of Sept. 18, a 22-year-old Darien woman reported that a number of items had been taken from her car as she and her father jogged at Waveny Park.  The woman parked her car near the trail entrance on Lapham Rd. while the two went for a half hour run.  When they returned to the car they discovered the following items missing from the car; a Blackberry valued at $350, an iphone 4G valued at $400, a  ladies' Swiss Army watch valued at $100, and a men's wallet containing various credit cards and $300 cash. There was no sign of forced entry. The woman did not know if she had locked the car or not.
